Rare red color 19th century antique hanging blown glass candle lantern in as found condition. Minor scratches to glass. Smoke shade is new replacement, not original. Easily electrified.
Patterned after the hanging lamps of ancient Byzantium, Hundi lamps were produced in the 18th century until the turn of the 20th century in Europe. They were hand blown from lead crystal by skilled glass artisans in the form of an inverted bell with a metal band, bottom finial, 3 chains, and a smoke shade. Most of the artisans were from Austria, Belgium and England. The lamps were originally designed to burn whale oil, and later were fitted for candles. The Hundi lamps were produced primarily for the Dutch East India Company and the British East India Company. Both companies had extensive colonizing commitments in Australia, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), India, Indonesia, the Caribbean, some parts of Asia, and the Americas.
